About Department of zoology

Serene environment of Ladakh makes this place an ideal for the wildlife. Huge number and diversity of animals are found in the region, in their natural habitat. It includes around 15 species of reptiles, 300 species of birds and 20 odd species of mammals; and Snow Leopard can be considered as the top predatory species among all. All this makes Ladakh an ideal place to study wild fauna. Department of Zoology intends to prepare students to take into research as well as prepare them for their future life. The department has a laboratory that can accommodate nearly about 40 students for lab work. It also has a rich specimen collection of around 500 animals and beside that staff and students are engaged in making a local collection from Kargil.


1. First and foremost aim is to impart quality learning and teaching process in the field of animal studies..
2. To make students familiarize with Zoological concepts, terms and phenomenon by making use of practical teachings.
3. To boost students to undertake Zoology as their subject in PG courses and also to undertake research in these areas.

  • The applicant is the first to have been appointed in Higher Education Dept from Ladakh region in any of Science subjects by J&K Public Service Commission, J&K.

  • At Eliezer Joldan Memorial College, Leh, the applicant has been In-Charge of Environment Science from 2005-2009. The applicant instead of collecting reports on various subjects, as per the syllabi, divided the whole class into number of groups and gave minor project assignment to each group related to the environment of Leh and guided the students in carrying out the field study/survey work and compilation of the projects. Some of the projects on which students worked are as follows-
(a) Study on AIDS awareness amongst Youths of Ladakh.
(b) Traffic in Leh Town.)
(c) Study for Various Pollutants in the Indus Stream at Choglamsar, Leh-Ladakh.
(d) Tourists’ Perception of Environment of Leh,
(e) Awareness about Air Pollution Amongst the People of Ladakh.
(f) Sea-Buckthorn- Its Economy in Relation to Ladakh.
(g) Industrial Waste Management..

Because of such minor projects, students learnt the practical aspects of Environment studies rather than limiting their knowledge to books only. Beside, students very keenly took part in the field work of these projects as they found it interesting and different from their regular class-work. Students also learn the compilation work of projects which may benefit them in a long run as many of these students may engage with different projects in future.

  • Three day National Seminar on Conservation and Management of High Altitude Wetlands of Ladakh organized by WWF-India, October, 2000 at Leh.
  • A two day Orientation Programme for Academic Counsellors for PTS-4, PTS-5 & PTS-6 of Tourism (BTS, DTS, ADTS) held at Jammu on 16-17 Feb. 1999 conducted by Indira Gandhi National Open University, Regional Centre- Jammu.

Projects worked on::

  • Worked as Principal Investigator on a project “Survey of some Lesser known water bodies of Chang-Thang sub-division of Ladakh, J&K, in relation to their status for Avifaunal Ecology”. The project was sponsored by Union Ministry of Environment and Forest, New Delhi.
  • Worked as District Co-Ordinator of a project on “Status of Elementary Education under SSA in J&K-2007” by National Institute of Administrative Research, Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, Uttrakhand. Unfortunately because of some problem at the NIAR (Mussorie) the project remained incomplete.
  • Presented number of Radio and TV programs on Science especially on ‘Birds and Environment’.
  • Have been a panelist on one Open Forum discussion on “Environmental Concerns of Ladakh” during a three day “Vatavaran- Environment and Wildlife Film Festival, 2008” in Leh, 11-13 September; 2008 organized by CMS and WWF.
