About Department of Geography
Welcome to the department of Geography at Govt. Degree College Kargil. The Department of Geography was established in 2014. The primary mission of the department is to provide a chance to receive bachelor level education in the subject of Geography to the students within the region. The department was established according to the special geographical location of the region, in which the students have opportunities to study the physical and cultural landscape of Ladakh. The department offers undergraduate courses leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Bachelor of Science (BSc). Since then the department has acquired distinction teaching and other activities. Extra care is taken to pay individual attention to the students in their laboratory work and lecture sessions. Experts in different allied fields are also invited for interaction and curriculum development. College library is fairly well equipped with geography books, journals and periodicals.

Geography teaches us an understanding of the places and environments. By studying geography students learn about their local area and compare their life in this area with that in others regions in Jammu and Kashmir, in India and in the rest of the world. They learn how to draw and interpret maps and they develop the skills of research, investigation, analysis and problem solving. Through their growing knowledge and understanding of human geography, students gain an appreciation of life in other cultures. Geography teaches us to motivate students to find out about physical world and enables them to recognize the importance of sustainable development for future of mankind.

The department follows the college admission procedure for admission to undergraduate level.
As Kargil has its own geographical importance, the department has always encouraging the students for conduct surveys and research in the various geographical aspects of the district, which would be a base to explore the further geographical importance of the area in the world of geography. The various land forms and rocks found in and around the district would popularize and enhance its importance in the world of geography. In this regard department had organized various field tours and conduct geographical surveys in various parts of the district. The department is also trying to boost the socio-economic relation of the area for which various socio-economic surveys were conducted in the local areas, in which the resource persons of the concern subject enlightened the students over the importance and other aspects in relation to the said topic. The department has also its future plans to organize such research and surveys, workshops to make aware the students about the socio-cultural and physical/natural relationship of the region.
