About Department of Botany

Kargil came to limelight only after the famous Kargil War in 1999. Prior to that, people hardly know about this place. Developmental wise, it is one of the underprivileged Districts in the country mainly because of its topography. It has a short summer season followed by prolong harsh winter when the temperature drops to -30°C.

  • It is worth mentioning that Drass, the second coldest habitation in the World falls in this District. The situation further worsens during winter with the closure of Zojila Road which connects the area with rest of the world. Therefore all the developmental activities are to be met during short summer season that last for only 6 months, is the reason that the area still remains under developed. Education is not an exception. However in past few decades, with awareness and opening of educational institutions, the literacy rate has increased. In this area Degree College Kargil the only highest seed of learning, is continuously imparting Higher Education and Moral values to the students of the District since its inception in 1995.

Notwithstanding of all difficulties and hardship, Kargil interestingly is a virgin marvel to Botanist. It harbours many plants of great economic and aesthetic value. It may not be wrong to consider it a “Natural Herbal Garden”. Science stream was introduced lately in 2004. Botany was one among other subjects in Science that was introduced during the said year.

1. First and foremost aim is to instigate quality learning and teaching process in the field of Botany.
2. To make students familiarize with Botanical concepts, terms and phenomenon by making use of practical teachings.
3. To boost students to undertake Botany as their subject in PG courses and also to undertake research in these areas.
4. To acquaint the different ecological and environmental issues with specific reference to Changing Climate of Ladakh, causes and consequences. This is being done in seminar in classes especially in 3rd year.
5. To undertake Botanical tours to different areas of Ladakh, so that students can be able to value the Natures marvels in the form of Medicinal Plants eg. Hippophae, Podophyllum, Ferula jaeskiana etc .
