ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Government Degree College, Kargil is located in the centre of district Kargil and is situated at an altitude of 8500 feet above the sea level and spreads across an area of at 31183.37 square meters of land. The Degree College Kargil, college was brought into inception on 31st March 1995 and has successfully completed more than two scores of its glorious presence in the district. At the time of its establishment the college had a Gross Student Enrolment of only 25 students but over the years this number has increased tremendously. Today, the Gross Student Enrollment is 2266 which is a great achievement for a population of around 1.42 lakh people. One of the interesting aspects of this increased number is that out of the total number of students who are enrolled here, 69% of the students are girls. The college provides facilities of Girls Hostel as well as Tribal Hostel with an aim to provide opportunities of girl education and women empowerment. The college is affiliated with University of Kashmir and is included in the UGC list under section 2(f) 12(b) on 17th March 2005. The college offers courses in Science, Arts and Commerce stream. The college is a model of eco-friendly college with 10KV solar plant which supplies uninterrupted electricity to the college. The college also offers vocational training courses in traditional Ladakhi craft. In order to cater the needs of working people and those who cannot afford regular academic courses, the college offers them courses through distance mode. IGNOU, MANUU and Distance Education University of Kashmir study centres are functional in the college campus and provide lifelong learning facility to the masses.
